Kurita's orders were to engage and destroy the invasion shipping LSTs etc, Oldendorf maybe but not Halsey. If Kurita had obeyed orders & destroyed our precious invasion landing/support ships, we'd be stopped from further island hopping for a year or so. Our toe-holds in Philippines at risk.
